Why does the church exist? According to Matthew’s Gospel, the risen Christ made it clear: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you” (28:19-20).
Based on this “Great Commission,” the United Methodist Church has stated its purpose: “The mission of the Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” While this is the Vision of the United Methodist Church it is Local churches that provide the most significant arena through which disciple-making occurs. At Huntsville First United Methodist Church we aim to live into our mission as United Methodist by influencing our community to know Christ.
We do this by growing in our love of Christ through worship, study, and service. Through these three ways we are intentional about growing in our relationship with Christ. The task of ministry does not stop with us though. It must be completed only through sharing God’s love with our community. Ministry comes in infinitely various forms. At Huntsville First UMC we offer different kinds of bible study, small group, and singles ministry. All ministries at the church are aimed at enabling you to grow in your faith and to prepare you for sharing your faith out in the community so that others can come to know Christ as well.
