DAY 38- MAUNDY THURSDAY

Day 38 – April 17, 2025 (Maundy Thursday)

Some think this day is called “Monday Thursday” because the word “maundy” is unfamiliar.  Maundy, from the Latin “maundatum”, means “mandate” or “command”.  The reason we call this day in the season of Lent “Maundy Thursday” is in remembrance of the Last Supper where Jesus commanded us all to love one another.

Jesus didn’t just instruct his disciples how to love and serve, he showed them. During this last supper, Jesus attended to them by washing their feet. This custom was usually done by the lowliest of servants, not the guest of honor! He also carried out the first communion at this dinner, using bread and wine to help illustrate his body and blood given for all of us for the forgiveness of sins.  We celebrate communion still to this day in remembrance of this significant event in our faith.

As we transition from Thursday to Friday, we remember the betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot.  Some believe Judas was tempted by riches, others hypothesize he wanted Jesus to show his power by saving himself from the persecution. No one could understand God’s ultimate plan, but we approach Good Friday with a sense of dread as Jesus enters his period of persecution and the road to the cross.

Join us this evening at 6:00 in the Wesley Worship Center for

The Living Last Supper

This drama will bring to life Leonardo DaVinci’s famous painting

of the Last Supper in remembrance of the events of Holy Thursday.

ALL ARE WELCOME!

Prayer: Lord, as we approach the joy of Easter, let us remember the road you traveled to get there.  Let us not forget all the things you went through; the rejection, pain, ridicule, hatred, betrayal, and more. Help us be worthy of your sacrifice and your inexplicable grace towards us. Praise your holy name forever and ever! Amen.
